A second brain for ADHD, without the gadgets or the subscriptions

There's a lot out there that promises to be a second brain for ADHD. Gadgets you wear. Apps with a monthly fee on top of a monthly fee. Free trials that turn into bills the day you forget to cancel, which, for a lot of us, is every time.

I wanted a second brain for ADHD that didn't add to the pile.

What is a second brain, really?

A second brain is a place outside your head where things go, so your head doesn't have to hold them. Notes, dates, account numbers, the thing you promised someone in March.

The trick isn't the notebook. It's having something that reads the notebook for you and hands things back when you need them.

Mine is two free tools working together. Obsidian holds my notes as plain files on my own computer. Claude, an AI assistant, reads them and helps me act on them.

No gadgets, no pay to play

There's no fancy hardware to buy. There's no trial software, no spyware, no shareware or pay to play. It's a basic system, but it works.

If I had to pay for the software, and then pay a monthly subscription on top, I wouldn't buy it. So I didn't set it up that way.

I'll be straight about the cost. Both tools have free versions, and the free versions work: you paste or attach a note to Claude, it helps, and you save the result into your notes yourself. If you want Claude to save into your notes for you, that feature (Cowork) is on the paid plans only. That's your call.

It helps. It doesn't take over.

Assistive, not directive. Supportive, not generative.

My second brain remembers, sorts, labels and checks. It doesn't make my art, my music or my decisions. I take my own pictures. I type my own passwords. Those stay mine.

That matters to me. A second brain should give you more room to be you, not less.

Be honest with it

Here's the part nobody tells you. An assistant can only help with what it knows. So I tell it what I think, what I feel, what I'm worried about and what I'm hoping for.

That also means being honest with myself about where things really stand. It isn't always comfortable. It's where the real help starts.

What to do next

Pick one thing you keep in your head that you shouldn't have to. An account number, a birthday, the date a bill renews. Write it in one note today. That's the first page of your second brain.

This is my own experience, not a doctor's advice. The kit is how I set mine up, one bite at a time.
